DR Tigner was short, dismissive and I was in his office for a total of 5 mins. The medicine I am on that I feel I'm allergic to has a solution to my problem, but his solution was to just quit taking it. That's not how it works. He didn't ask me anything about why not, just kept telling me to stop. I've been to several DRs in my life but never had one so dismissive. The one thing that was pleasant about my experience was he was nice as far as personality goes, and so was his office staff. Other than that it was incredibly annoying.
So anyway, I do recommend doing your research on pricing beforehand and perhaps even looking elsewhere for care, especially if you'd like to have any time with your physician.
I contacted the billing department the next day and asked how an appointment that lasted literally less than 3 minutes total could cost $300 and why insurance wouldn't cover it. She said that's the standard cost they bill insurance and since my deductible wasn't met, I was responsible for the full price. No discounts, nothing. She then said I needed to discuss my concerns about the lack of time I had with the physician, with the office manager, who wasn't available and would need to call me back. Unfortunately, I missed the call and received a voicemail that was as equally dismissive as the other interactions I had with that office. She also pinned the complaint on the physician, when in reality, it wasn't the physician's fault. That office was WAY overbooked. From working in medical offices, I can't fathom why they were shuffling people in and out of there so quickly for any other reason than money. A lot of healthcare has turned into nothing but business these days, and this office seemed to be the poster child of that.
Upon arrival they had me fill out several forms and advised me that I would have to pay $90 that day because my insurance wouldn't cover the appointment. (Side note, I'm self employed and the affordable care act was my only option for insurance this year as all private sectors pulled out of Blount county for 2017. I pay full price, yet the plan covers nothing until in network and out of network deductibles are paid. That's 4500 and 7500 on top of the monthly premium. Most medical offices will make adjustments to help, but this office would not. This is just a fair warning for anyone else on this awful Humana plan.)
After checking in, I had to wait because the lobby was packed, and they were clearly running behind for the day.
Once I got called back to meet with the doctor, I had appx 30 seconds to chat with him before he ordered a scope and sprayed numbing spray in my nose. He then left and it sounded like he visited with two other patients while the numbing spray took time to work. (You can hear through the walls.)
The office was able to get me a next day appointment which was much appreciated, but then....
I visited this office on account of some symptoms that raised my concern. Due to my extended family's history with throat cancer, and my immediate family's need for esophageal stretching, it seemed like an appropriate thing to get checked out.
To make matters worse, when I went to pay, the charge had gone from $90 to $300 without any form of a notice. I paid, and left, only to contact the hospital and realize I now wouldn't have enough money left to cover the barium swallow. Had we had any adequate time to discuss this in office, we could have weighed which test would be most beneficial to address my symptoms.
Once he returned, he did the scope which took maybe a minute, two tops. He said all was clear and that he'd order a barium swallow to see if that would show more of what's causing these symptoms. He wasn't unpleasant, he actually seemed fairly nice and the scope didn't hurt at all, but I didn't feel like he took, or had, any time to address my concerns. The office appears to operate like a valvoline moving patients in and out of rooms so quickly, you don't even realize what's happened. And my doctor and the other I saw were running in and out of patients rooms so quickly, I can't fathom how they keep things straight.
